Weather – week 2
                                                 TEMPERATURE

Every living thing and everybody needs the sun. It gives us heat and light.
The sun is a star which lies 150,000,000 km from the earth. The sun’s
surface temperature is about 5,800°C. The sun is made up of gases called:-

                           _______________________ and _______________________ .

We measure the ‘hotness’ or the ‘coldness’ of the air using a thermometer.
We measure in degrees celcius. 0°C is freezing point, 100°C is boiling point.

Name some different types of thermometers:

        Can you think of:
        • Clothes we wear in hot weather? _______________________________________

        ________________________________________________________________________

        • Machines that keep you cool? ______________________________________

        ________________________________________________________________________

        • Ways to protect yourself against the sun? ___________________________

People used to use the sun to tell the time using a sundial. This was before clocks were
invented. They noted the position of the sun and the shadow it cast. Try to make you own
sundial using a template and following the instructions carefully.

        USING YOUR SUNDIAL

        1. Place the sundial on a level surface in the sunshine.
        2. Turn the sundial until it faces south, using a compass.
        3. Use the sun to tell the time by marking the position of the shadow on the card every hour.

You can now tell the time using the sun!
