Science Y3/Y4 – Heat – week 4

                                                   KEEPING WARM

        Truth to Teach (Source)

To learn about appropriate clothing for the different seasons.

To learn about the significance of wearing layers of clothing.

To find out how birds / furry animals keep warm.

To investigate which materials are good for insulation.

To appreciate ways in which we can steward our bodies, school and homes by keeping them at
              appropriate temperatures.

        Way to Work (Means)

              1. Review the previous lessons.

              2. Dress up children in different colours and thicknesses of clothes. Discuss the differences
between these clothes. Talk about clothes we would wear in the different seasons.
Discuss why it is important to keep ourselves warm.

              3. Set up the experiment to investigate which materials keep water the hottest in tins filled
with boiling water. Use woollen material, man-made fabric, cotton, silk, etc. Record the
temperatures at regular intervals recording the temperatures on the board for the
children to enter onto a graph later.

              4. Talk about the way in which God has created us to be warm-blooded and what this means.
                   Contrast with cold-blooded creatures.

5 Discuss other ways by which we keep ourselves warm. Eg fire, blanket, central heating,
quilt. Emphasise the importance of wearing lots of layers of clothing rather than one
thick garment as the layers of air can become trapped between each layer.

              5. Talk about how birds and furry animals keep warm. Some children may like to conduct
their own research on this area. Refer to God’s wisdom in creating creatures that are
                   warm-blooded.

              6. Let the children complete the first part of their worksheet.

              7. Discuss how we keep our homes/school warm. Talk about shutting doors in cold weather,
sealing draughts, etc. Discuss ways in which we can save heat and be good stewards of all
that God has given to us.
