Science Y3/Y4 – Heat – week 2
5. If time permits a third experiment could be performed to show that not all the air in
the jar burns but only the oxygen. Put a candle on a saucer in a bowl of water with the
candle well above the surface of the water. Put a jar, on modelling clay, upside
down over the lighted candle. Mark the level of the water on the jar. The candle will
go out and the water will gradually rise up into the jar. The water is pushed up into
the jar by the pressure of air outside. Only the oxygen is used, not all the air.
6. Let the children complete the first parts of the worksheet.
7. Talk about how firemen put out fires by preventing the air reaching the flames. Talk
about the two types of fire extinguisher – carbon dioxide for electrical fires and water
for non-electric fires. Talk about fire blankets.
8. Let the children complete their sheets. Some children may like to count the fire
extinguishers in the school and note the different types.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
The children will hopefully realise the benefits and dangers of burning substances as well
as appreciating how fires are extinguished.
