Science Y3/Y4 – Heat – week 1
INTRODUCING HEAT
Truth to Teach (Source)
God created the sun as the original source of heat and placed the earth at exactly the right
distance from it for life to exist.
To recognise other sources of heat.
To know how to measure heat.
To appreciate that some substances change when they are heated.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Show pictures of objects which give us heat, e.g. sun, candle, fire, radiator, hot water
bottle, heater, match. Ask the children what all these have in common.
2. Talk about God creating the sun and placing the earth at the right distance from it for us
to be able to live. The other planets would be too cold or too hot for human life. Perhaps
the children could find out later how hot the sun is by looking in books or on the internet.
3. Ask the children how we measure heat. Show a variety of thermometers and ensure that
they can all read the scales. Graphs of room temperature could be created over a period
of time.
4. The children should know the boiling and freezing points of water - 0°and 100°C. Boil a
kettle and measure the temperature, then measure it every minute afterwards for 10
minutes. Mention the word ‘lukewarm’ when the water is tepid. Refer to God describing
the church at Laodicea as lukewarm in Revelation 3.
5. Let the children complete the first part of their worksheet as the water temperatures are
being measured.
6. Distinguish between a substance being heated and burned. Eg A piece of wood can be
warmed and not change, but if it is burned it turns to ash. Let the children fill in the table
on their sheet. Remind them of the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in Daniel 3
who did not get burned even in a hot furnace because God saved them.
7. Gather back to review the main points of the lesson.
8. If time allows, let the children browse though books on heat, or draw a variety of
thermometers.
