SPELLINGS AND PHONICS
Lessons 1-11
These lessons are based on the photocopiable masters from Topical Resources Book: - ‘Phonics Book 1a’ which
will be completed in Y1.
Phonics Book 1a by Topical Resources ISBN 978-1-872977-49-2

Less able children or children arriving later in the school year may benefit from ‘Phonics Book R’ which is
aimed at the reception class and provides worksheets for single sounds.
Topical Resources also produce books to teach high frequency words called ‘Read, Write and Spell’.
Truth to Teach (Source)
• To encourage the children to spell and build words carefully to serve the reader of their writing as well
as to enable them to improve their reading.
• To hear, identify, separate and blend phonemes in words.
• To learn to recognise and spell simpler high frequency words.
• To recognise words which have common spelling patterns.
• To use ‘Word-building Trains’ to encourage children to build their own words.
Way to Work (Means)
Two lessons are devoted to phonic work most weeks. Various activities can be used to introduce the work; often
only one of the phonic pages suggested below is used. Some displays could be created with objects beginning
with the sound.
Time should also be spent on high frequency words to enable the children to recognise them in their reading
books and for them to use them in their writing. Flashcards could be made to help the children to become
acquainted with them.
Spelling tests may be given if the teacher feels it is appropriate but often tests begin in Y1.
