        THIS IS A SENTENCE

        Truth to Teach (Source)

            Heart concept: Father’s Love

God demonstrates his love to us not only by his words, but also by all that he has done and continues to do
for us. In the same way we are to ‘love not (just) with words or tongue but (also) with actions and in truth.’
            (1 John 3:18)

                • To begin to appreciate the structure of a sentence

        Way to Work (Means)

            1. Take the sentence ‘Father God loves us.’ Write each word out separately, attaching it to the front of
four children. Have these children jostle and push against one another as each ‘word’ tries to be first
in the sentence. Establish that there is a bit of a problem if these people say they love each other,
yet what they do says the opposite. Explain that our actions speak.

            2. Return to the words jostling to be first in the sentence. These words all need to work together
peacefully to give a message. Each word has a part to play in the sentence. Let the children give way
to one another and get into the correct order.
Establish how good it is when families work together in love.

            3. Talk about the sentence as a family; the word ‘Father’ is taking the lead and all the other words are
happy to let this word lead. The lead word always begins with a capital letter. The word ‘us’ is happy
to give way to all the other words and come at the end. A full stop comes immediately after this word
as a signal that the message is complete; it is the end of a sentence.

            4. Use simple sentences from any book, eg ‘Guess How Much I Love You’ by McBratney and Jeram
(Published by Walker Books. ISBN 0-7445-3224-8). Mount them on card and then cut them into
separate words. It is worthwhile identifying each sentence by colour so that they can be sorted
quickly. Each sentence needs to be put in a pot. Use different sentences to meet the abilities of the
                 children.

            5. Ask the children to take a pot of words, sort them into the right order, write out the sentence across
an A3 piece of paper, lined for six sentences. Encourage them to look out for capital letters and full
stops because they are clues as to the order of the words. When a child has done one sentence
he/she can return the pot of words and get another one and carry on. (It will not matter that the
sentences do not come in the right order this week.)

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

              1. The children will appreciate that there is a right order for words in a sentence so that a message can
                 get across.

              2. They will appreciate that God’s love is shown through all he says and does.

              3. The children should appreciate that we show love by our obedience and by putting others first.
