Science Y6 – Forces and motion – lesson 3

Objects cannot move by themselves. They need a push or a pull to stop
them or to start them moving.

        Experiment 1

Aim: To discover what is needed to stop or start an object moving.

        Apparatus: Toy cars, metre ruler

Method: Using a flat surface, measure how far each car travels with one push. How can you
                       make this a fair test?

Results: Cars How far it travelled
                                 Car 1
                                 Car 2
                                 Car 3
                                 Car 4
                                 Car 5
                                 Car 6

We made sure that it was a fair test by ______________________________________________________

        Experiment 2

Aim: To measure how far each car runs past the end of a ramp.

Apparatus: Toy cars, ramp, wooden blocks, metre ruler

Method: Set up a ramp then let (do not push) each car in turn go down the ramp.
Measure how far each one travels past the end of the ramp.
        Results:
                                           Cars Distance past the ramp
                              Car 1
                              Car 2
                              Car 3
                              Car 4
                              Car 5
                              Car 6
