SUGGESTIONS FOR WRITING LESSONS

LESSON 1
W Writing a chronological holiday report
Encourage the children to share about their holidays. Talk about the
difference between a basic factual report eg I went to London then I
went to see my grandparents, with an expanded, more detailed and
creative report. Suggest ways of using adjectives and adverbs to create
interest as well as more factual detail describing scenery, feelings,
opinions, etc. Encourage the children to write chronologically starting with
the beginning of their holidays.
LESSON 2
Writing a class poem without rhyme
Read from a non-fiction book the description of a butterfly then read the
poem ‘Was Worm’ (see separate sheet) about the butterfly to compare
how it is written. Draw attention to words which are missed out in the
poem and the extra descriptive words used. Talk about changing words
like ‘bright as a peacock’ to ‘peacock-bright’ for use in poems.
Use a large picture of an animal, eg a camel, elephant, peacock, lion. Let
the children suggest describing words to put up on the board about the
