Y4 Summer Term Overview
LESSON 5
W Writing prose from pictures/diagrams/maps
Show the children some local maps and/or diagrams in text books. Talk
about the advantages and disadvantages of diagrams and pictures being
used to convey information. Discuss with them how they learn best – from
pictures or from words. Use a map or a diagram to give the children an
opportunity to write a piece of prose about it.
Eg the water cycle, directions from a local landmark to the school, a
poster advertising something, pictures of parts of a flower, a tree or a
creature.
LESSON 6
Writing an explanation
Pose the questions: -
Why should I brush my teeth?
Why do I need a brush and toothpaste?
What will happen to my teeth if I do not clean them?
Discuss the benefits of explanations in words and through diagrams or a
combination of both. Encourage the children to use both words and
diagrams to answer the questions.
LESSONS 7-8
Writing an imaginary story
Read a section of ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ by Jonathan Swift.
www.online-literature.com/swift/gulliver
Talk about how it must have felt for the Lilliputians to find a giant on
their beach. Gulliver was a ship’s surgeon on the eighteenth century and
was shipwrecked onto the beach in Lilliput. The Lilliputians were tiny
people so they took a while to realise what the big hill was on their land.
