Science Y5 – Living and non-living things – week 4
                                 INTERDEPENDENCE AND ADAPTATION

        Truth to Teach (Source)

1 Corinthians 12:27 ‘Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.’

 To show how different organisms within an environment are interdependent.

 To study a section of the school field, identifying organisms within it.

        Way to Work (Means)

            1. Review the previous lessons.

            2. Show pictures or a DVD of a particular habitat not previously closely studied.

            3. Discuss this habitat; how plants and animals live within it and are interdependent.
Interdependence inevitably includes food chains which will be studied next week but the
children may know which creatures are prey to others.

            4. Take the children outside having explained that they are to work in groups to measure out

a square metre of grass. The square is to be marked by pegs and string. Every living
organism in the square could be collected and identified. It may be necessary to dig into
the soil to find more creatures.

            5. The children should draw their living organisms and write all they can discover about them
from books and the Internet, especially how the organisms are adapted to their
                   environment.

            6. Review the lesson. Draw parallels with us as human beings being dependent on one
another. Refer to 1 Corinthians 12:12-27.

            7. To consolidate the work, the children could complete the worksheet at a later time or for
                   homework.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

The children will have seen the spiritual lessons we can draw from the environment around us; we are

interdependent as humans too. They will have learnt more about the living organisms in the local
environment and how the creatures have adapted to their habitat. Hopefully, the children will have
worked well together in groups and found appropriate ways to record their experimental work.
