Science Y5 – God’s Amazing Matters – lesson 2
                                            MATERIAL DETECTIVES

        Truth to Teach (Source)

Exodus 31:1-5 God gives man skill, ability and knowledge to use his resources.

 To increase knowledge, appreciation and stewardship of the amazing variety of resources
created by God for us to use to meet our needs in a way that will glorify him.

 To identify natural and man-made materials used in the building of the school/home.

        Way to Work (Means)
            1. Review the first lesson.

            2. Meet with a builder or architect to talk with the children about materials used in building a
                house or school.

            3. Explain that the children are going to conduct a survey of their home or classroom and school
to identify natural and man-made materials used to make various objects. They are going to
                be ‘Material Detectives’.

As materials are sometimes difficult to identify it may be helpful for the builder/architect to
be available. Draw pupils’ attention to walls, ceilings, floors, etc.

            4. Allocate a set time for them to fill in the table.

            5. Gather back to discuss their investigations.

            6. Talk about the craftsmanship involved in designing buildings. Read the above verses. Remind
the children that Jesus was a carpenter like his father, Joseph. Encourage the less academic
children who may have practical skills that they are just as important as other children and
should never see themselves as inferior.

            6. If time allows, give the children the challenge of selecting materials for an imaginary, eco-
friendly house. They could draw a labelled diagram or list the materials they would select.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
            1. It is hoped that the children will be more aware of the enormous variety of materials used in

                building our homes and schools.

            2. They should appreciate the talent and skill God has given to men and women through the
ages to create beautiful things from natural resources.

            3. Less academic children should be encouraged that their gifts and talents are vital to society
and in furthering the Kingdom of God.
