Science Y5 – God’s Amazing Matters – lesson 1
                                          GOD’S AMAZING MATTERS

        Truth to Teach (Source)

            Genesis 1 God’s creation

James 1:17 ‘Every good and perfect gift is from above ……..’

Job 28 ‘There is a mine for silver and a place where gold is refined…..’

 The earth’s natural resources consist of rock, soil, water, air, plants and animals.

 Some resources are renewable; some are not in the immediate future.

 The value of resources changes.

 Resources have different values to different nations.

 Trading of resources is not always conducted fairly.

 God gave man a mandate to rule over the earth.

        Way to Work (Means)

           1. Introduce the project and outline the aims. (See overview) Talk about what we mean by
natural resources, distinguishing them from man-made materials. Possibly show a video/DVD
                of different natural environments.

           2. Let the children work in pairs to identify the earth’s natural resources from Genesis 1.
(Water, air, rocks, soil, plants, animals)

           3. Gather back to compile a list then direct the children to Genesis 1:28-30 and Genesis 2:15.
Discuss God’s mandate to man to rule over the earth. How should this be done? (Justly, in

consideration of others, without making idols, wisely, creatively, for God’s glory, etc) Are
there enough resources on the earth for everyone?

           4. Share some amazing facts:-
                  • If we drilled a hole from the earth’s surface to the centre of the earth it would be a
                     distance of 6,700 km.
                  • If we could use all the material that the earth contains it would weigh 6,600 million,
                     million, million tons,
                  • In a city of a million people, materials from a hole 5.5 km x 3 km x 8 m deep would be
                     needed for housing.

Yet we only use resources relatively near the surface of the earth as drilling underground is
limited by machinery. Consequently, resources are being used up and the natural environment
