Science Y5 – God’s Amazing Matters – lesson 15
                                               METAL DETECTORS

        Truth to Teach (Source)

Job 28:10-11 He tunnels through the rock; his eyes see all its treasures. He searches
the sources of the rivers and brings hidden things to light.’

Colossians 2:2-3 ‘… Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.’

 Practical exploration and assessment of samples of metals to identify and compare them.

 It is God’s heart that we search first and foremost for spiritual treasures.

 We need perception, discernment and wisdom in handling physical and spiritual treasures.

        Way to Work (Means)

              1. Review the previous lesson.

              2. Explain that the children are going to be ‘Metal Detectors’ today as they look at samples
of metals and apply various tests to them in order to identify them and find their

                  properties.

              3. Put the children into groups and give guidelines regarding the worksheet and metal
samples. Each child should fill in a worksheet or photocopy one after.

              4. Gather back to share results and draw conclusions. Talk about the need for perception,
discernment and wisdom in handling physical and spiritual treasures.

              5. Share the following as illustrations of how the properties of metals are used:-
                      • An anchor needs a metal of maximum weight but an aeroplane needs minimum
                          weight.
                      • Elasticity is important for springs.
                      • An aluminium saucepan heats up quickly and loses heat quickly. Stainless steel does
not have these properties. Aluminium heats up thirteen times faster than stainless
                          steel.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

             1. The children will have gained experience in applying scientific tests to the various metals.

             2. They will have benefited from working together, discussing observations and test results.

             3. They should realise the need for perception, discernment and wisdom in handling physical
                  and spiritual treasures.
