Psalm 23:5 ‘You anoint my head with oil and my cup overflows.’

Hebrews 1:9 ‘God has set you (Jesus) above your companions by anointing you with the oil of
joy.’

 The Holy Spirit is often referred to as oil.

 Finding oil, drilling for oil and transport to the refinery.

 Products made from oil.

Way to Work (Means)

1. Review the overall aims of the project.

2. Read a simple account of oil discovery, refining and uses. Alternatively, show a video/DVD.

3. Talk about the Holy Spirit and refer to passages where people have been anointed, e.g.
Exodus 29:7, 1 Samuel 10:1. Anointing meant setting apart for a certain task. Discuss
whether the Holy Spirit sets us apart.

4. Let the children refer to information cards (cut up information sheet) around the room to
complete their worksheet or else write up questions for them to answer about the story of
oil. If enough books are available, the children could write their own account of the
discovery, refining and use of oil.

5. Gather to share information. Pray for the anointing of the Holy Spirit on the children.

Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

1. As well as factual knowledge acquired about oil, the children should have a greater
appreciation of the Holy Spirit as One who anoints us and enables us to be more like Jesus.
