MARVELLOUS MINERALS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Job 28 ‘There is a mine for silver and a place where gold is refined…..’
1 Timothy 6:17 ‘Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put
their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who
richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.’
Exodus 31:1-5 God gives man skill, ability and knowledge to use his resources.
Deuteronomy 8:17-18 ‘You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have
produced this wealth for me.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is
he who gives you the ability to produce wealth….’
Rocks are made up of minerals which God has provided for man to discover and use for the
common good.
God has given man ability, talent and skill to use these natural resources.
God gives us the ability to gain wealth so we should not become proud of our own efforts.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Show the children a display of salt, gold and silver jewellery, copper pipe or item, iron nail
or item, aluminium can, talc and gemstones as in rings, necklaces, etc.
Explain that these are all minerals found in rocks. Remind the children of the work they did
at the beginning of the term in identifying the metals in Job 28.
Refer specifically to verse 10-11. Compare this to spiritual truths that God wants us to
discover (Colossians 2:2-3)
2. Discuss the ways in which men have sought to become wealthy, eg in the Gold Rush, and
man’s greed in handling God’s resources. Read the verses above from Deuteronomy.
3. Talk generally about minerals:-
• There are over 3,500 minerals in rocks across the world.
• They are inorganic (not living).
• Geologists identify them by their colour, hardness and shape.
• They are usually found as ores which are rocks with minerals in them.
• Some gold, silver and copper can be found in almost pure lumps called nuggets.
• They are found by taking photographs from satellites, by sensitive detectors or by
conducting tests.
• They are often obtained by mining.
