PLASTICS
Truth to Teach (Source)
The properties and uses of plastic.
To provide information from which the children answer questions.
To give the children opportunity to create their own experiments on plastic.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the overall aims of the project.
2. Send the children in pairs around the school/home to list the uses of plastic. Give them
about ten minutes.
3. Gather back to share.
4. Give the children a plastic bag and/or a small plastic item, eg toy, milk container cap. Ask
them to devise an experiment in a set time to carry out on the plastic and submit them to
the teacher before trying them out.
Give a few suggestions to help less able children, eg trying to paint plastic, carrying a litre
of water in a plastic bag, finding the weight of stones/bricks which can be carried in a
plastic bag before it breaks, trying to hammer the milk top flat, floating and sinking, etc.
5. Gather back to share results.
6. If time allows, let the children read about plastic from the worksheet and answer the
questions. This could be done for homework.
7. End by thanking God for inventors who have used natural resources to make man-made
materials which have enhanced our lives.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children will have gained factual knowledge about plastics.
2. They will have had experience in devising simple experiments.
3. They will hopefully have a developing sense of gratitude for inventors who have used their
God-given talent and skill to enhance our lives.
