Science Y6 – Forces and Motion – week 1
c) Repeat bringing the opposite poles of the magnets together.
d) The children should conclude that like poles repel, unlike poles attract.
Experiment 2 – Making a floating compass.
a) Magnetise four large darning needles by stroking them for about thirty strokes with the south pole of the magnet,
always stroking in the same direction. The eyes of the needles must be the north poles.
b) Push each of the needles through a cork.
c) Float them in a bowl of water. Discuss what happens.
d) Bring the south pole of another magnet over the middle of the bowl of water. The needles may form a pattern.
6. Let the children write up the notes and experiments with labelled diagrams. Guidelines of how to write up an
experiment should be given, eg Equipment or Apparatus, Method, Result, Conclusion.
7. Review the main points of the lesson.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
The children will have learnt the basic facts of how magnets and compasses work. Hopefully, they will have discovered
more information on the Internet or have been postured to find out more from books.
They should also realise the importance of some of the invisible things which God has created which have enormous effect
in our daily lives.
