RHYMES TO PUZZLE OVER
Truth to Teach (Source)
Heart concept: Creator and Creation
Proverbs 25: ‘It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the
glory of kings.’
Philippians 4:13 ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’
Just as man seeks to search out the secrets God has hidden in his universe, so too people can enjoy
setting word puzzles or riddles for others to think about and solve. Some riddles are expressed in
rhyme.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Show a jigsaw puzzle and discuss how we use it. Ask whether the children enjoy doing number puzzles
or word puzzles like crosswords. Discuss why some like doing them and others do not.
There are many aspects of life, which are like puzzles, and we have no choice whether or not we will
tackle them!
It may be that people are scientists, trying to puzzle out one of the secrets that God has hidden in his
universe for people to discover, so that they can invent something that will really serve other people.
Maybe it is something very ordinary, like someone who has lost some keys so how are they going to
get into the house? What should we do when we are faced with a puzzle? Do we simply burst into
tears and moan, or is there another way of handling this situation?
2. Establish the importance of praying because God knows everything – he alone knows all the answers
to everything. Remind the children of the verse in Philippians 4:13. It is not a matter of simply relying
on ourselves.
Quote the example of Daniel who once said of God after he had shown him the meaning of a dream
that God is the ‘Revealer of mysteries’; in other words he shows us what he wants us to discover.
3. Give the children examples of word puzzles or riddles. Give out the sheet ‘Rhymes to puzzle over’ to
everyone or show an enlarged version.
4. Ask someone to read through the first spell me riddle, and see if anybody knows how to solve it. Be
sensitive to putting the above into practice and praying.
Decide how to use the sheet: -
• The teacher may want to read through one of the other riddles so that the children know what to
expect, then pair up the children and give them five minutes to see if they can solve all the other
riddles.
• The teacher may want to work through the riddles together, and have the children answer some
written questions in their books afterwards.
• What are the answers to the spell me riddles?
• What has four legs but cannot walk?
• What has white leaves which never grow?
