RHYMES TO REMIND YOU

        Truth to Teach (Source)

        Heart concept: Wisdom

1 Kings 4:32 ‘King Solomon spoke three thousand proverbs… men of all nations came to listen to
                              Solomon’s wisdom.’

 Wise teachers know how to make truth and wisdom memorable. Rhyme can serve them in this purpose.

        Way to Work (Means)

            1. Show a picture from a Bible story book of King Solomon. Briefly review the story of God asking
Solomon what he wanted above all else. Solomon realised that truth and wisdom come from God alone,
and he realised he needed God to give him wisdom to help him be a good king.

            2. Tell the children that during Solomon’s life he spoke three thousand proverbs. Explain that a proverb
is a short sentence, easy to remember, and it contains wisdom. The Bible tells us that men of all
nations came to listen to the wisdom God had given him. There is a whole book of these proverbs in
                 the Bible, e.g.

‘Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.’ Proverbs 16:24

‘The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.’ Proverbs 18:10

‘A generous man will himself be blessed.’ Proverbs 22:9

            3. Talk about rhyming words helping people to remember what is important – things which are wise and
true. Share some rhymes which other Christian teachers wrote to help children and adults remember
                 how to live:-

                       Being proud
                       Is not allowed.
                       You before me
                       Will help us agree.
                       It is good to obey
                       Straightaway.

                       Nobody’s perfect without any sin
So admit wrongdoing and let the light in.
Jesus still loves you and so do we
Overcome fear – the truth sets you free.

            4. Explain that these are ‘rhymes to remind you.’ They can be about all sorts of things, and they are to
help people to become wise by putting them into practice.
                 Another old-fashioned rhyme: -
Be ye man or be ye woman
Be ye coming or be ye going
Be ye early or be ye late
Don’t forget to shut the gate.
