METAPHORS

            Truth to Truth (Source)

 Review Y5 teaching on metaphors.

 A metaphor describes something as if it were something else.

 A simile says that something is like something else, whereas a metaphor says that it is
                    something else.

 Metaphors help to create a picture for the reader.

 Metaphors make narrative and poetry more interesting.

            Way to Work (Means)

                1. Review previous lessons.

                2. Ask each child to take an object from a bag then describe it using a metaphor. The children
may need reminding as to what is meant by a metaphor.

                3. Ensure that the children can differentiate between a simile and a metaphor and can give
examples of each, e.g. Psalm 1:3 is a simile; Psalm 5:9b is a metaphor.

                4. Read out the following metaphors and ask the children what they think are meant by them.

She is the black sheep of the family.
The school is in a safe pair of hands.
                           The thief was caught red-handed.
The missionary said that life was not a bed of roses.

                5. Talk about the use of similes and metaphors to add interest to creative writing.

                6. Let the children try the worksheet.

            Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

                 1. The children should be more confident in recognising and using metaphors.

                 2. They will be familiar with commonly used metaphors.
