Truth to Teach (Source)
Review Y5 work on similes and metaphors.
A simile says that something is like something else whereas a metaphor says that something is
something else.
The Biblical Book of Proverbs contains many wise sayings written by Solomon.
Proverbs are wise sayings.
Proverbs are often very old but still true.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Let the children suggest as many similes as they can remember. Remind them of the
difference between a simile and a metaphor.
3, Talk about the metaphors stating that Jesus is the Good Shepherd, the True Vine, the Bread
of Life, etc.
4. Read out several proverbs and discuss their meaning.
Eg Pride comes before destruction (Proverbs 16:18)
A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father (Proverbs 29:3)
Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors they succeed (Proverbs 15:22)
The grass is always greener on the other side.
Great minds think alike.
Let sleeping dogs lie.

5. Ask the children if they know any proverbs to share.
6. Let them work in pairs to find the proverbs about pride in the following verses: -
Proverbs 8:13 Proverbs 11:2 Proverbs 13:10
Proverbs 16:18 Proverbs 29:23
7. The children should complete the worksheet.

1. The children should be able to distinguish between a simile, a metaphor and a proverb.
