                  Poetry is used in different parts of the Bible as a means of communication.

                  Poems and songs are often easier to remember if they are divided up into verses/stanzas and
                    choruses/refrains.

                  There are different kinds of poems, e.g. haiku, cinquain, jingle, riddle.

            Way to Work (Means)

            1.  Review the previous lesson.

            2.  Read the children a number of different kinds of poem, as above, from the Bible and from poetry
                books.

            3.  Talk about four kinds of poetry:-
                •   Haiku – a Japanese poem with seventeen syllables, written in three lines with 5,7,5 syllables
                •   Cinquain – a poem with twenty-two syllables, written in five lines with 2, 4, 6, 8, 2 syllables.
                •   Jingle – advertisements often use jingles to help people remember them.
                           An example of a jingle is: Being proud is not allowed.
                •  Riddle – a question to answer. An example is in Judges 14:14.

            4.  Talk about verses or stanzas; choruses or refrains.


            5.      Show the children how to write a haiku.

                  a)   Choose a subject like an animal, sport, season, flower, etc


                  b)   Explain that the first line has five syllables, the second has seven syllables and the third
                      has five syllables. Stress that there is no need for words to rhyme.


                  c)   Give examples:    A sudden storm blows,               I love athletics,
                                         Little boats tossing around,        Fitness, training, energy;
                                         Danger looms ahead!                 Thank you, God, for strength.

             6.  If the children have time they may like to try writing a cinquain. Show them how to.

                    a)  Select a subject with a two syllable word.


                     b)  Find two words to describe a) with four syllables.
