UNSTRESSED LETTERS
Truth to Teach (Source)
1 Corinthians 12:12-31 Each part of the body is important.
Review teaching on syllables.
Many words with two or more syllables have letters, usually vowels, which are not really heard
in the spoken word.
The importance of speaking correctly to aid spelling.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Talk about syllables in a word and how to divide words with a double consonant, eg let ter, rub
ber.
3. Remind the children of the above verses to illustrate that each person is important even
though some children may be quiet and shy. Compare this with letters in words, which appear
not to be heard, but which are important in spelling the word correctly.
4. Let the children go around the room with their rough books to correct the words which have
missing silent letters (see separate sheet). Explain that the children may use their dictionaries
if necessary.
5. Gather back after a set time to compare results writing the correct spellings on the board.
6. Stress the importance of speaking correctly to aid spelling.
7. Let the children complete the worksheet or give further practice in dictionary work by giving
them difficult words to find the meanings.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should be aware of a wider range words with unstressed letters in them.
2. They will have had more experience in using dictionaries.
