d) Find four to six words to further describe the subject, with eight syllables.
e) One or two words which rename what the poem is about (a synonym), with two
syllables. E.g. Winter
Coldest season,
Windy, bitterly cold,
Needing hat, scarf, gloves and warm coat,
Arctic!
6. Let the children try writing these types of poems in their books.
7. Some children may like to write a jingle and/or a riddle, or find some in poetry books.
8. If time allows, the children could share some of their work at the end of the lesson.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should appreciate poetry as a means of communication.
2. They should be aware of the different kinds of poem.
3. Most children will have had experience in writing a haiku and a cinquain.
