TYPES OF POETRY 2
Truth to Teach (Source)
Poetry is an effective form of communication.
Some poems have rhyming words, some do not.
A rhyming couplet consists of two lines which rhyme.
Other kinds of poetry include nonsense rhymes, calligrams, shape poems and tongue twisters.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Let the children share some of the poems they wrote in the previous week.
2. Talk about other kinds of poems:-
• Tongue-twisters are difficult to say. An example is: Peter Piper picked a piece of pickled
pepper.
• Nonsense poems are full of nonsense, e.g.
Now rocking horse, rocking horse where shall we go?
The world’s such a big place, you must know,
That to see all its wonders, the wiseacres say,
‘Twould take us together a year and a day.
• Shape poems are written in the shape of the subject of the poem, e.g. a tree.
• Calligrams are written in fancy writing to portray the subject of the poem, e.g. red letters
for fire, spiky letters for frost.
• Rhyming couplets are two lines which rhyme.
3. Let the children select one or two of the above to write their own poems.
4. Give as much guidance as is felt necessary.
5. Let the children share their poems at the end of the lesson.
