Science Y3/Y4 – Electricity – week 5
CONDUCTORS AND INSULATORS
Truth to Teach (Source)
To identify the meanings of ‘conductors’ and ‘insulators’.
To conduct experiments to show which materials are conductors and insulators.
To draw spiritual comparisons.
To reinforce safety rules.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Let the children begin by constructing simple circuits with a bulb, wires, battery and
switch.
3. Remind the children of the complete, continuous circuit required for electricity to flow,
reminding them of the spiritual parallels drawn out in earlier lessons.
4. Put the words ‘conductor’ and ‘insulator’ on the board to see if anyone already knows
their meaning. Use dictionaries if necessary. Talk about when conductors and
insulators are necessary. Show some insulating tape.
5. Give the groups or pairs of children various materials to put in their circuits to
separate conductors and insulators.
6. Gather back to share findings and draw conclusions.
7. Discuss spiritual examples. What stops our flow of life? What can we introduce into
our lives to maintain a flow of life? (Bible reading, prayer, etc)
8. Remind the children of the safety rules regarding electricity including looking out for
bare wires on appliances.
9. Let the children fill in their worksheet or record their work in some other way.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
The children should be able to identify which materials are insulators and which are
conductors of electricity. They should be able to draw spiritual parallels in keeping the life
of the Spirit flowing through their lives. They should also be aware of safety rules to be
observed when using electricity.
