Science Y3/Y4 – Plants – week 11

                                              PLANTS STORING FOOD

        Truth to Teach (Source)

To refer to the Creation story in Genesis 1 where God created plants for food.

To examine and draw a selection of fruit and vegetables.

To ascertain where food can be stored in plants.

To conduct experiments to show how food is used up in plants as roots and shoots grow.

        Way to Work (Means)

              1. Review the previous lessons.

              2. Show the children cross-sections of fruit and vegetables.

              3. Give time for the children to draw a number of cross-sections, labelling as appropriate.

              4. Show a number of bulbs, e.g. onion, hyacinth, crocus, daffodil then cut them to show cross-
                   sections.

              5. Discuss where the food made by the different plants is stored, e.g. roots, stem, leaves.
Explain that most plants make too much food so it is stored in different parts of the plant.
Humans benefit from this extra store. Plant food is used by the plant when seeds and
fruit are formed and/or to help them survive through the winter.

              6. Perform experiments to show how food supplies are used by the plant.

                   Experiment 1
Put a cut-off carrot top in a saucer of water. Observe new leaves forming over days.

                   Experiment 2
Put an onion in a glass jar with the bottom touching the water in the jar. Watch the onion
shrink as the roots and shoots grow.

              7. Gather the class to review the lesson and thank God for the variety of plants we have to
                   eat.

              8. Write up notes with pictures.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
The children will have a greater appreciation of how plants use food for their growth but also realise
how God has provided for us by creating plants for us to eat.
