Science Y3/Y4 – Plants – week 7

                                                PARTS OF A FLOWER

        Truth to Teach (Source)

To show the wonder of God’s creation in the design of a flower.

To discuss how God used plants to demonstrate the way in which he cares for us.

To show the range of structures in a flower and their functions.

        Way to Work (Means)

                1. Briefly review the previous half term’s work.

                2. Read Matthew 6:28-34 and discuss the way in which God created and cares about plants.
Compare with the care he has for us as human beings.

                3. Have a display of pictures, books, real flowers of all shapes and colours for the children
to examine under magnifiers, microscopes, etc. Discuss the variety in God’s creation.

                4. Draw a cross section of a flower on the board and build up a picture as on the children’s
worksheet, talking about the function of each part of the flower.

                5. Give time for the class to complete the worksheet then help them to write notes to record
the function of each part of the flower: -
stem, leaf, petal, sepal, stigma, pollen tube, roots, ovary

                6. End the lesson by reviewing the parts of the flower and praising God for his creativity.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

The children should recognise the parts of a flower and appreciate the function of each.
Hopefully, they will experience a sense of wonder at the wisdom of our Creator God.
