Science Y3/Y4 – Plants – week 8
FLOWERS WITHOUT PETALS
Truth to Teach (Source)
To begin to appreciate the variety of non-flowering plants which God has created.
To research the different groups of non-flowering plants.
To seek to categorise non-flowering plants.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lesson.
2. Explain that there are lots of groups of plants which have no flowers – let the children
suggest some of them, e.g. grasses, fungi, mosses, lichens, pond plants.
3. Let the children go outside, giving them a set time to gather as many different grasses as
they can. Let them display them on paper/card. More able children may be able to name
them by looking in books.
4. The children could examine mushrooms, algae, mosses and lichens gathered before the
lesson, under magnifiers. These could be sketched, identified, displayed, etc. Have plant
books available for research.
5. Let the children suggest family groups for these plants.
6. Suggest that the children look out for more non-flowering plants during the week.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
The children should have an overview of the variety of plants and have some knowledge of the
way in which we can categorise them.
