Science Y3/Y4 – Plants – week 4
SEED DISPERSAL 1
Truth to Teach (Source)
To teach that plants reproduce by making lots of seeds.
To look at the amazing ways in which God has designed seeds to be dispersed.
To appreciate God’ faithfulness in providing the conditions for seeds to grow.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lessons.
2. Observe, discuss and write up the results of the last lesson. Some of their seeds may not
have grown. Refer back to the Parable of the Sower, reminding the children that not all
the seeds grew. Ask the children why plants do not become extinct if the seed doesn’t
grow. (Most plants produce many seeds to allow for some not growing.)
3. Read Genesis 8:22, drawing the children’s attention to God’s faithfulness in providing
warmth, rain, light, etc for plants to grow. Introduce the word ‘dispersal’, explaining its
meaning, and the need for the seeds to be scattered.
4. Show part of the video, ‘The Private Life of Plants’ – BBC Television. This gives examples
of seeds being dispersed in a variety of ways:-
Seeds carried by wind – sycamore, dandelion, ash
Seeds that are carried – acorns, seeds planted by farmers, etc
Seeds with fleshy fruit – hips, haws, berries
Seeds that float – coconut
Seeds with hooks – burdock
5. If possible, show the children some real seeds from each category above.
6. Let them draw and label the seeds writing a sentence or two about how each one is
dispersed.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
The children will hopefully be more aware of God’s wisdom in creating plants and the way in
which they reproduce.
