Science Y3/Y4 – God’s amazing creatures – week 2
FOCUS ON CLASSIFICATION
Truth to Teach
Genesis 2:19 ‘Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and
all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name
them; …’
Naming and classifying God’s amazing creatures, using keys
To look at the main characteristics of some animal groups
Way to Work
1. Review the previous lesson.
2. Share any discoveries about the largest and smallest creature in the world.
3. Read the verse above about Adam naming the animals. Talk about the need to group animals.
God is a God of order (seen in the order of the planets in the universe, life cycles, etc) and we
can be too! Explain the meaning of ‘classification’ (the act of arranging in classes or
categories). Show some simple keys from science books. Refer to libraries, offices, shops,
etc where items are classified and ordered.
4. Have the main features of selected animal groups on the board to discuss or compile the list
with the children. Explain ‘warm-blooded’ and ‘cold-blooded’ and ‘vertebrate’ and
‘invertebrate’.
a) Mammals - vertebrate
feed their young on milk
are covered in hair or fur
are warm-blooded
b) Reptiles - vertebrate
cold-blooded
covered in scales or shells
live in water or on land
breathe through lungs
c) Amphibians - vertebrate
cold-blooded
need water and land
d) Mini-beasts - invertebrate
small creatures including insects
