The Start of Our Company
Once the executive positions were filled, we began searching for potential products. Three weeks went by and
we still did not find a product worth producing and selling; the whole team was going in the wrong direction.
Luckily, we were inspired by a speaker at our island’s very first JA symposium. We had the privilege to hear
Ms. Vivian Lau, the President of JA Asia Pacific, share her words of wisdom; but among all the things she
said, the words that resonated with us the most were: “It’s not what you sell, it’s why you’re selling it.” With
this in our minds, we found that there is a large number of foster children on the island. This also reminded one
of our members that her sister was once a foster child. Her sister came from an abusive home, and when she
arrived at her new home, bruises were apparent on her arms and face. Her embarrassment could be seen when
she brought her material possessions in a small trash bag. Her own story moved us to create what we call
Filluv Cases. Our motto: Full hearts, Fill bags.
Challenges
There were multiple challenges we faced, but what affected the company
the most was the lack of commitment within our team. Due to personal
reasons or ride issues some members were not able to attend meetings,
trade fairs, and community service opportunities. And although all
members came from the same school, we had shy individuals in the
company. To overcome this obstacle, executives created a team building
opportunity with Guam Foster Families. Over a meal, Guam Foster
Families shared stories of children in the foster care system and their ways
of helping them.
Human Resources
The Human Resources Department consists of our president and HR personnel which oversees a team
of twenty-four members. At each meeting, executives discussed specific events from a prepared
agenda while Human Resources recorded minutes, checked attendance and snapped photos for
documentation. During the first two weeks of JA, the team focused on icebreakers and team building
exercises. These exercises helped executives and members determine which area they would excel in;
each member had individual skills and talents that would be utilized in a specific department.
