6 Cerne Abbas Charity Fundraising Competitions
Cerne Abbas Charity Fundraising Competitions
Every year Cerne Abbas SMBC holds a number of events to raise money for charity including
two competitions, the ‘Six of the Best’ and the Cerne Open Triples, held on consecutive days
over a weekend in late summer. This year’s nominated charities were Weldmar, a local cancer
charity and Alzheimer’s Research UK. These two events and a popular themed crossword were
the main contributors to about £2,000 raised for these worthy causes. The club would like to
thank all those who contributed so generously, participated and put so much effort into making
these events a success.

Invitation Triples
Twelve teams played four
games each, with the winner
being the team with the most
points. After three rounds two
Devon teams, Ottery St Mary
and Sidbury, were both stand-
ing with a 100% undefeated
record and were even equal on
shot difference.
Both of these teams won
their final games but last year’s
runners-up, Sidbury, won their
game by more shots to take the
Triples Winners trophy.

This year’s six teams comprised two from
Dorset, last year’s runners-up, Heather-
lands plus Blackmore Vale the 2015/16
League Champions, Hazelbury Bryan, and
two from Devon, last year’s winners Won-
Triples Runners-up Ottery St. Mary ford and Sidbury.
Brab & Bridget Hallowes and The remaining two teams were the
Ron Berry pride of Somerset, Templecombe, and Hol-
mans, the 2015/16 West Cornwall Premier
League Champions. The unusual competition format comprises three rounds of Singles, Pairs
and Triples, the top two teams qualifying for the final.
The qualifying rounds proved to be quite a dog fight with only Hazelbury Bryan surviving
unbeaten, helped by a sterling performance from Dorset County Manager Brian Baker, who
won all three of his singles matches and a prize for the Best Singles player.
