RAINEY STUN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS TO WIN SHIELD
The McCulloch Charity Shield produced surprise winners in Rainey Community with a 4-shot
win over league champions and IIBA Irish Club Champions, Steelweld “A” formerly Cookstown
Parochial “A”. Earlier in the week Steelweld had a convincing win over Rainey in the final league
game and having defeated St Swithin’s Men in the semi-final and were expected to have a com-
fortable win in the final against a Rainey Community team, who after building up an 18-shot lead
against Desertlyn got complacent and saw their lead cut to 5.
Steelweld made the better start and by the half way stage had a 7-shot lead but the 3
Rainey rinks skipped by Gary Merron (playing Colum McHugh), Joe Martin (playing Damian
McElroy) and Seamus Kyne (playing Sean Quinn) began to come back and lead by 2 going into
final ends. Martin and Kyne picked up 3 shots to produce the surprise win.
