TEACHING BOWLS IN SINGAPORE
These and the cover Photos come from the Bowls Singapore website. I would stress
that they are not teaching people to play Short Mat Bowls, they are using Short Mats in Schools
to introduce the young and enthusiastic to the sport of bowls and in particular outdoor Lawn
Bowls.
As they say - “Short Mat Bowls is a very nice introduction to Lawn Bowls, with this format
you can start learning the sports in your school, community centres and even in a long corridor!
You only need a space of 15m x 2m to have fun and exercise. Regular Lawn Bowling can im-
prove your hand-eye coordination, exercise your mental agility and very easy on you joints!”
Who knows what the long term development of bowls will become in Singapore. It may
well become a schools sport and grow from there. Of course they have great weather and its
a great place. The bottom pictures are from a session in the British Club. There’s nothing quite
like a Singapore Sling in the long bar at Raffles but watch out for the Wildlife!
