Teams were randomly drawn prior to the event and each one allocated a coun- 21
try as their name. Lunch was provided in the form of a buffet from a local company
and in the afternoon everybody had slice of birthday cake and a glass of bubbly to cel-
ebrate the occasion.
As is normal with a tournament we had a winner and the winning team was Scotland
(Pete, Ken and Mavis) with the runners up being Holland (Don, Pauline and Barbara).
Thanks to all who took part, especially our friends from other Clubs who joined us for the
day and a special thank you to Fran Boyns, a founder member of the Club who travelled
up from Sidmouth to join us for the day.

OPEN FOURS
This was to be the sec-
ond County Competition
organised and run by the
newly formed competition
team. One problem that
the team took on board
was the lunches.
Rather than con-
Open Fours Winners with Dave Sawyer (Centre)
tinue to complain to the
BIBC catering Department a proactive approach was taken. The catering manager was asked
to provide a set menu for the day. The menu was then circulated to all entrants so that they
could select their individual choices and return to the team.
On return of the menu choices the catering manager was provided with the menu choices
for each of the sittings
and individual teams.
One would have
thought that this was the
perfect solution, it was
until 6 people decided to
change their selection
at the last moment! Two
weeks before the com-
petition the team agreed
the format and group-
ings, all was going well
until the last week,
when one by one four Open Fours Runners-up
teams dropped out.
Each time the competition was reformatted and on the final day we had our fingers crossed.
Fortunately we had no more teams drop out, all went well with the competition.
From the very start it looked like a two horse race. The two strongest teams, The Gloster
Knights and The Powerpuff Boys, not meeting until the final. The final was watched by the
faithful few, as always. The final proved to be a demonstration of how the game could and
should be played. The final score did not reflect how tight the game had been, but there was
only going to be one winner -The Powerpuff Boys beating the Gloster Knights 15 - 3.
