26 Playing over ten ends whatever the discipline allowed this timed event to achieve a finish
on time-ish. The sight of so many bowlers congregating and playing in close proximity was
previously unknown in these parts. Huge cheers and endless conversations showed specta-
tors and players enjoyed themselves throughout. A very large raffle attracted a great spend
with the high standard of prizes being well received.
Devon Freewheelers set up a three man stall in the Restaurant Bar to promote their ac-
tivities and the great service they provide to the NHS. During the afternoon fully liveried mo-
torbike was ridden through the bar allowing many brave souls had their photos taken astride
              this giant machine.
At the conclusion of play the Axminster Mayor, Cllr Jeremy Walden, arrived to present
the special cheque of the amazing amount Jurassic Bowls managed to raise on the day of

Ottery St Mary Open Singles Competition
Ottery St Mary Open Singles Competition
The Annual Open Singles Competition was held at Ottery St Mary, taking part were 32 players
from Devon Dorset and Somerset, clubs. The standard of bowling was amazing, and some
surprise results filtered through by the end of the round robin, it was evident that the B and
the C mat were catching out several of the players, both mats were fast and with the effect of
the floor, you either got it or not.
The top two from each group progressed to the next round. In the Quarter finals, between
last year’s winner Benny Bass from Uffcombe and John Redstone from Bow. On the 5th end
it was 5 all but John scored on the next two ends leaving Benny with a lot to do on the last
end and John duly won 8/6. Lorraine Axtell from Winkleigh, a previous finalist, played Eric
Pavey from Sidbury, going into the last end Eric was ahead 7/6 but Lorraine scored a 4 on
the final end leaving her the winner and progressing to the semi-finals. Dean Rundle from
Somerset played Eugene Balbinski from Cerne Abbas, unfortunately Dean was struggling
with the mat, eventually loosing 13/2.
The final match saw Thomas Perris from Wonford facing Malcolm Sheen from Sidbury.
Thomas put in a good performance scoring well on the first three ends a comeback from Mal-
colm left him at 6/5 on the 6th end but Thomas scored on the final two ends winning 9/5.
