FIRST WESSEX EVENT A BIG HIT 9
FIRST WESSEX EVENT A BIG HIT
Everyone agreed they had a great time at the
hotel and the hotel owners were so pleased they
extended the discount offer for the second time.
Five mats were laid in the hotel’s light an airy
ballroom and the floor proved to be a very good
floor with few if any idiosyncrasies.
The opening evenings fun bowls drive saw
Hilary King-Jones, Vic Hildersley & Hubert Cox
romp to victory with a scoreline of 27 - 4 and a
thus a huge shots plus of 23.
The 2-bowl singles was the next event to be
completed. The first semi-final was an all Win-
kleigh affair and was an absolutely cracking
match. Going into the last end John Horsham led
Singles Finalist Brian Latham by 7 - 6 over Lorraine Axtell but Lorraine man-
and winner Lorraine Axtell aged to score a two for a narrow 8 - 7 victory.
In the other semi, no matter how hard John
Paddy fought he could not get the better of
Brian Latham. John needed a two on the last
end to level the match but in the event Brian
scored a single for an 8 - 5 victory.
The final turned out to be a strange
match to some degree. Lorraine won four of
the ten ends and Brian five but Lorraine
scored two each time whilst Brian scored
singles. So despite winning less ends Lor-
raine emerged victorious at 8 - 5 with the last
end unplayed.
The Triples event saw Gill Silver, Pat Collier Seated winners John Horsham,
& Elinor Pilgrem score a last end two in
Lorraine Axtell & Michael Lilley and finalists
Pat Collier, Gill Silver & Elinor Pilgrem
their semi-final for a 10 - 8 win over Jill Owen, Val
Latham & Robin Collingridge. The other Semi saw
Michael Lilley, Lorraine Axtell & John Horsham in dev-
astating form with a 15 - 1 win over Eve Collingridge,
Hazel Rutley & Doug Owen. In the final, Michael, Lor-
raine & John kept up their good form to beat Gill, Pat
& Elinor 9 - 3.
Lorraine Axtell was now looking for a clean
sweep of all the titles and John Horsham wanted the
Pairs to add to his Triples. In the Pairs semi-finals they
eased home 9 - 4 over Terry Darvill & Ian McLeod
whilst Pam Fayers & John Paddy romped home 13 - 2
over Michael & Cecilia Lilley.
In the final, Pam & John were not to be denied
and after 5 ends led 9 - 0. A couple of three’s to Lor-
Seated Pairs Champions John raine & John brought them back to 6 - 9 but two single
Paddy & Pam Fayers with finalists put Pam & John in an unbeatable 11 - 6 position with
Lorraine Axtell & John Horsham one end still to play.
