DORA itself has concluded that licensing provides the greatest level of
consumer protection. However, for PIs who may want to make preparations
for other alternatives to a Colorado PI license, particularly to maximize
continued access to records and databases, there are 44 other states which
license PIs in their states and allow out-of-state applicants. Utah did have a
residency requirement, but that requirement was removed in 2020.

Besides licensing, there are currently many private certification programs
that PIs can apply for. Private certifications certainly can provide consumer
confidence and for PIs who feel they could benefit from certification; it may
be a worthy way of building up and maintaining credentials. I have compiled
a list of certification programs for Colorado PIs to look into. If a certification
program in your field of expertise is not on this list, please feel free to reach
out to PPIAC for recommendations.
