Message from the Chairperson, Board of Trustees
Syed Manzur Elahi
Chairperson, Board of Trustees, EWU.
Chairman, Apex Group and Former Adviser,
Caretaker Government
It is indeed a great pleasure to write a message for the Souvenir to be published by the Department of
Information Studies and Library Management, East West University to celebrate a week-long program on
Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week from 24 to 31 October 2020 initiated by UNESCO. The
theme of this event “Resisting Disinfodemic: Media and Information Literacy for everyone and, by everyone”
highlights how we can differentiate between authentic information and disinformation and address the
challenges related to this. Media and Information Literacy (MIL) can enhance our competencies to become a
global information literate citizen. These competencies can help the people to access, interpret, evaluate, and
use the information they need in ethical and effective ways. The rapid growth in information and
communication technologies has opened the door for participating in the vast array of media and information
in today’s landscape. Thus the use of media and information literacy skills has become integral to enable the
people to identify Misinformation, Disinformation and Fake news.
It is always a proud moment for us to know that the Department of Information Studies and Library
Management continuously celebrate such occasions with diversified set of activities to aware the society
about these issues. Since the birth of this Department it has been organizing varied forms of programs such
as international conferences, workshops, seminars not only to facilitate the information professionals of
Bangladesh but also around the world. I am glad to hear that the Department of Information Studies and
Library Management, East West University is first in Bangladesh to celebrate the Global MIL week which is
also recognized by the UNESCO country representative in Bangladesh. My good wishes are always with
them.
