Message from the IFLA President
Christine Mackenzie, FALIA
President International Federation of Library
Associations and Institutions (IFLA)
Congratulations to the Department of Information Studies and Library Management for this initiative to
promote Global Media and Information Literacy Week.
The theme of the souvenir – resisting disinfodemic – media and information literacy for everyone – is so
important in these challenging times. There is so much viral fake news, disinformation, and simple
misunderstandings across Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites particularly in regard to COVID 19
that it can seriously affect people’s lives. It is vital that libraries work to educate communities about how to
recognise what is legitimate and what is not.
As the IFLA website says, “Literacy is a foundational skill. With it, doors are opened to countless other
opportunities to learn and grow. Without it, people struggle to find work, to make the most of the internet, or
to gain new skills.”
I wish all colleagues in Bangladesh and especially at East West University all the very best.
