Today we live in the age of information where information has become a very crucial part of our daily life.
With the development of internet and other related technologies, the explosion of information has gone into
a rapid pace. So, finding the authentic and relevant information is not an easy task. Information literacy is a
set of skills which enable the people to recognize the need for information and increase the ability to locate,
retrieve, use and evaluate the information effectively. To make people aware about the importance of Media
and Information Literacy (MIL) UNESCO in cooperation with GAPMIL, UNAOC and the Media and
Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue (MILID) University Network started observing the Global
MIL Week from 2012. This year UNESCO is celebrating the ninth Global Media and Information Literacy
(MIL) Week from 24 to 31 October 2020, under the theme “Resisting Disinfodemic: Media and Information
Literacy for everyone and, by everyone”. The theme highlights how we can look to addressing disinformation
and divides by recognizing our shared interest in improving everyone’s competencies to engage with the
opportunities and risks in today’s landscape of communication, technology, and information.
The Department of Information Studies and Library Management started its journey at East West University
at spring 2016. This is the first among the leading private universities who offered BSS (Honors) in
Information Studies and Library Management. Since its inception, the department has been organizing
diversified forms of activities i.e. seminars, workshops, training, international conferences, competitions,
celebration of different international days and weeks not only to facilitate the information professionals of
Bangladesh but also the information professionals around the world. We are proudly announcing that the
Department of Information Studies and Library Management is the pioneer among the universities of
Bangladesh celebrating this day every year since 2017. I am extending my warmest wishes for the success of
the program.
