As we start a new year we often make new resolutions. We
will get in shape, we will lose weight, we will save money, we
will finish college, we will enroll in PME, etc., etc. We start
out strong and then after a short time we start to lose steam
and start playing “let’s make a deal” with ourselves. The ex-
cuses start, everything gets pushed off, and we go back to the
old pattern. You see it in the gym. January is packed and by
mid-February the place is almost empty with just the familiar
faces.

I have a suggestion....let’s not try to eat the elephant in one bite.
My point is it is good to have goals, but let’s take it one step
at a time. Every day just try to improve on the day before. You
don’t need to make a herculean leap, just a step better than you
were yesterday. Weigh in at 200 today? Shoot for 199.9 tomor-
row. Running for 25 minutes today? Make it 26 minutes to-
morrow. You don’t have to do everything all at once and make
a drastic change. You don’t have to try and beat everyone else
at something, just strive to be better today than the guy or girl
in the mirror was yesterday.
It’s about progress not perfection…something to think about.
