Dear Friends,

It is a distinct honor to join the Lansing branch of the National Association for the Advancement
of Colored People (NAACP) as it celebrates its 55th Annual Freedom Fund Dinner. For years,
the Lansing branch has led the way with its commitment to our history and our future in the
               Greater Lansing area.

Indeed, when the COVID-19 pandemic tested our community in unimaginable ways, the Lansing
branch jumped in to address the needs of the most vulnerable. They were an instrumental
resource for thousands as they formed partnerships to host food drives, register voters, and
invest in small minority-owned businesses. As we gather to celebrate individual and community
achievements at this dinner, I want to express my sincerest gratitude for their invaluable service.

The theme for tonight, “Passion Led Us Here,'' is a reminder of the road — both the one we’ve
traveled and the one that rises up to meet us. As a community, we continue to fight for the most
pressing issues, from the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to police reform, economic
justice and combating climate change. I believe we are at a crossroads moment in our history, a
once-in-a-generation opportunity that will define who we are and the legacy we intend to leave
behind. Time will tell whether we stood up for the next generation or if we simply stood by.

Tonight, let us celebrate our collective wins and uplift those around us who are striving to make
a difference every day. Let us pick up the mantle from those that came before and recommit to
the work that lies ahead. Again, congratulations and thank you for your dedication.

               Sincerely,

               Elissa Slotkin, Member of Congress
               Michigan’s 8th Congressional District
