IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO READ MORE ON THIS WEEK’S MAJOR THEME:
Psalm 24
1 Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due to his name; worship the Lord in the splendour of his holiness.
3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over the mighty waters. 4 The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic. 5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. 6 He makes Lebanon leap like a calf, Sirion
like a young wild ox. 7 The voice of the Lord strikes with flashes of lightning. 8 The voice of the Lord shakes the desert; the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh. 9 The voice of the Lord twists the oaks and strips the forests bare. And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”
10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord is enthroned as King forever. 11 The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace.
Sunday June 9 - Who rules in the storm?
Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Psalm 29:1
Many think that David wrote this psalm in the middle of a thunderstorm; there are so many references, as we shall see, to the elements of a storm. Storms are powerful and overwhelming; they can terrify children and adults alike with their sound and fury. The Canaanite nation who lived around King David worshipped Baal, the god of the storm, who had to be appeased. Maybe this is the heavenly being that David is calling upon to acknowledge the God of Abraham as supreme? Today we have taken to naming storms, not so that we can worship them but perhaps because we can’t help but take note of them!
We also talk about the storms of life; events which may come unexpectedly and with the potential to overwhelm us. Sudden redundancy, bereavement, marriage breakdown, war, political and economic insecurity and more, are all threats to the stability of life. We never know what’s around the corner. How do we face the storm? David gives us the key here in this verse. The Lord God is the One with glory and strength above all the power of the storms. Our priority is to worship him, especially in the storm. If we have made a habit of worshipping him when all is at peace then it will be easier to continue when difficulties arise.
Lord God, you reign above everything; you are glorious and mighty! I worship and adore you today. Amen.
