Wednesday February 5 - Free and unfettered
“Look at the birds of the air... and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not much more valuable?” Matthew 6:26
We are called to live free from anxiety, unfettered by worries about our material needs. This verse urges us to look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet our heavenly Father feeds them. Are we not of more value than they? This passage profoundly illustrates God’s provision and care for all his creation, reassuring us that we are even more precious in his sight.
Our daily lives are often filled with anxieties about food, clothing, and other material needs. However, Jesus reminds us that such worries are unnecessary. By observing the natural world, we see that God provides abundantly for even the smallest creatures. This reflection challenges us to trust God’s provision all the more and let go of our anxieties about the future. To live free and unfettered means to release ourselves from the grip of material concerns, and trust that God will meet our needs. It requires us to focus on seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness, knowing that all these things will also be given to us.
Today, let us reflect on our lives and consider what anxieties we need to release. Let us embrace the freedom that comes from trusting in God’s provision and focus our hearts on the treasures of his kingdom.
Lord, help us to trust in your provision. Free us from worldly anxieties and guide our hearts towards your kingdom. Amen.
Thursday February 6 - First things
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33
This is a powerful reminder of our priorities amidst the countless distractions of daily life. With so many demands on our time, energy, and attention, it’s crucial to return to our foundational kingdom values and basics.
The scripture doesn’t just tell us to seek God’s kingdom but also his righteousness. Various pursuits often consume our lives, but as believers we must intentionally prioritise seeking God above all else. This involves actively choosing to place his values first in our lives, despite the secular pressures of social media, television, and other influences that typically promote contrary values.
Seeking God’s kingdom and his righteousness requires an intentional commitment, not only for ourselves but also for our families and friends. We must create and cultivate a culture in which God’s principles are the foundation of everything we build upon. This means eliminating compromises that lead us away from living according to his word.
It’s also important to remember the promise in this verse: as we seek God’s kingdom and his righteousness, all our needs will be met. Some may fear that prioritising God will result in lack or unhappiness, but Jesus assures us that when we put God first, everything we need will be provided.
Lord, help us to seek your kingdom and righteousness first in our lives. Guide our hearts to prioritise your values and trust in your provision. Amen.
