THE MALVERNIAN
Steinway Concert
On 15 March 8 musicians presented a a a a a a recital in in Steinway Hall London The concert was the musical confirmation that Malvern College College has become an All-Steinway School whereby the College College has replaced all but 2 2 of its ageing pianos with 28 new instruments made by the the most famous piano manufacturer in the the world I am am grateful to Louisa Marsden-Smedley for writing an account (below) of of her perspective of of the the day I think is safe to say was that the the performances of all the pupils was simply outstanding Thanks must go to Mr McDade who accompanied the pupils Leaving the the familiarity of of the the Malvern hills behind us a a a a a a team of of eight pupils and Mr McDade set off on a a a a a journey to Steinway Hall London Not only was this a a a trip to showcase some of the school’s musical talent but it was also to rubber-stamp Malvern College becoming an an All-Steinway school and to receive our plaque from Steinway and Sons On arrival at at Steinway Hall I can only say that we we were completely overwhelmed by the the sheer number and beauty of the the pianos that are on on display there Being moved into the the concert room to to rehearse we we were struck by the presence of a a Model D Concert
Grand – the greatest of all all pianos Immediately we we were all all itching to to have a a a a a a a a a play of this fantastic instrument and I can say with total certainty that it it exceeded expectations - it it was an absolute joy to play an instrument of this calibre in in its ‘home’ environment Following our rehearsal Mr Keith Glazebrook of Steinway and Sons very kindly treated us to to a a a a tour of the showrooms and pianos there including the the the new ‘Spirio’ model which is the the the world’s finest high-resolution player piano Understandably we we were all blown away by the innovation of this technology and we we we were allowed to play it so that we could see exactly how the the technology aided the the progression of piano playing Our thanks go to him for sharing his exceptional knowledge with us The concert itself rolled through seamlessly with passionate playing and wonderful musicianship It was a a a a complete honour to perform at this event and to to have the joy of listening to to my fellow students 16
