GERMAN
IB German A Language and Literature
(native-speaker course)
This course is intended to prepare German native speakers in the Hundred and Pre-Sixth Form for the IB German A course, by laying the foundation for analysis of literary texts at a higher level. Initially the course leader will ask pupils to review the main text from their literary studies this academic year, to demonstrate the contrast between their previous level of analysis and the depth of analysis required for German A. The course will then progress to short stories by W Borchert, such as “Die Küchenuhr” und “Das Brot”, before moving to material by H v. Kleist. Finally, the course will conclude with analysis
of non-literary texts, considering the use of register, targeting readership and typical characteristics of such texts.
IB German B (non-native speaker course)
This course is intended to prepare pupils in the Hundred and Pre-Sixth Form for the IB German B course in the Sixth Form. Building on strong core skills at GCSE level or higher, pupils will gain a head start by understanding how their knowledge of literary and non-literary texts is assessed on this course in the Sixth Form. This will allow pupils to focus their analysis of the literary content on what the author is trying to convey through the events, ideas, themes and characters of the given piece, and how best to comment on and summarise these elements. The study of non-literary texts will focus on the use of register, text- type conventions and nuances in delivering key messages to the readership. Where required, core grammar will be reinforced to pave the way for more complex use of the subjunctive and other higher- level structures.
