 LATIN
     Aim of the course
As well as nurturing the general skills needed for successful Sixth Form study, this course aims to enhance the skills and knowledge specifically relevant to the A level and IB Latin courses taken in the Sixth Form. These skills include knowledge of content and context, critical and reflective thinking, linguistic and literary analysis, and the appropriate use of an extensive Latin vocabulary.
Course outline
The course consists of two complementary strands taught in tandem by different teachers:
» An Introduction to Latin poetry will explore the themes of love poetry, myth and metamorphosis
» Satire via excerpts from the poems of Catullus, Ovid and Juvenal
» The Trojan War as a Wellspring for Classical Literature will
cover topics such as: the myths surrounding the Trojan war
and its heroes; epic poetry; Augustan Rome and the culture within which Virgil’s Aeneid was composed; extracts from the Aeneid which give a flavour of its main themes and events.
Assessment of the course
Pupils’ input into and development during the course will be assessed by looking at pupils’ class contributions, their notes, essays and translations, and their final Powerpoint presentation to the rest of the group. Pupils will also self and peer assess.
