● Upscaled and disseminated electric sheep shearing for wool
quality improvement by conducting hands on training in
Dundgobi in June-July 2020. It aimed to contribute to upscaling
proven mechanical wool shearing for the modernization of the
Mongolian wool supply chain, strengthening market access and
creating new jobs in rural areas. MoFALI aims to expand this
practice throughout the country and it gives more new jobs
opportunity. Under sub contract with AUO cooperative following
results and impact were generated:
- 25 Master shearers and 15 Assistant shearers from not only
Khovd but also Dundgobi, Umnugobi, Khuvsgul, Sukhbaatar,
Selenge and Tuv provinces were trained in 2020 by Khovd
aimag shearing team, who was training in 2019. They received
remote guidance from Mr. Ch. Enkhnasan and Ms. Zoe Leech
from New Zealand during their reinforcement training as well.
Total 340 sheep and 155 lambs were shorn during the 7-day
training. The master shearers taught how to handle the
equipment including shearing gear, sharpener and a newly
designed baling machine and showed on site mobile shearing
service.
- The trainees improved their skill of shearing from 15 minutes
to 3 minutes per animal. The Master shearers (5 trainers)
were able to shear in 1,50 minutes.
- Cooperatives of 6 soums of 2 aimags Dundgobi and Khovd
participated in wool collection and supply chain activity. Total
87,1 tonnes of wool were prepared/some shorn by machine
and supplied to 5 national factories. Total MNT 143,7 million
was generated to the herders’ livelihoods and MNT 130,6
million Government incentive is being provided. Partnerships
between the cooperatives and national factories were
strengthened.
- Price to be sold at the factory was increased by 60,6% and the
volume of the wool supplied was increased by 76,4% from the
last year. This calculation was made based on 1 cooperative.
In relation the COVID 19 there was an opposite assumption to
lose the volume by 40-50%.
- Total 85 jobs full time and 414 temporary jobs were created.
Assumption was opposite due to the COVID 19 situation.
- MoFALI and other relevant policy and decision-making bodies
highly appreciated and support with policy. MoFALI proposes
AUO and UNIDO to cooperate on training shearers of camel
and yak wool.
- Post training results MNT 1,000 per sheep was shorn by the
shearers. Initial estimate was MNT 350 per sheep, it has
increased to MNT 1,000.
- An interactive training course to support the practical training
is now available at: https://learning.unido.org/login/index.php.
- Shearers manual and Shearing equipment manual were
formulated and uploaded to the e-course in PDF format (TG3
and TG4).
The Minister of MoFALI awarded 3 people (head of AUO Khovd,
head of Agriculture Department, head of Investment and
Development Policy Department of Dundgobi) with Excellence
